Grandparent's Day Grandparents are honored in September every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. The tradition was started in 1961 by Mrs. Beckett Hanna whose intention was to raise awareness about the contributions of senior citizens to the community. Miriam McQuade later lobbied for an official recognition of grandparents and her efforts were realized in 1978 as President Jimmy Carter designated the first Sunday after Labor Day to be a national holiday. It is celebrated today by family reunions, picnics and story-telling times. |
