Presidents' Day, USA (Mon - 17 Feb 2014)

Presidents' Day

Presidents' Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February in The United States of America.

There were originally two public holidays, one commemorating the birthday of George Washington on the 22nd of February, and one for Abraham Lincoln's birthday on the 12th of February.

Presidents' Day became a federal holiday in 1971 upon the adoption of Richard Nixon's proposal to replace the two celebrations with one that would honor all past presidents of The United States.

Although referred to as Presidents' Day it has never officially changed its name from the original: "Washington's Birthday". In fact most of the ceremonies are still held in honor of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
